COUG March 17th Presentation

Topic: Method R – Performance Optimization the Smart Way

Presenter: Chad McMahon, Senior Consultant, CGI Database Services

  • Chad McMahon has been an Oracle DBA for 8 years, and is currently a senior database consultant at CGI focusing on Oracle performance optimization for multiple clients
  • He has solved a multitude of Oracle performance optimization initiatives, ranging from assisting developers with simple query tuning, to resolving large scale mission critical ERP performance problems

So you’re late for work… How do you prevent it from happening again? Do you remove your vehicle’s surface imperfections to make the vehicle more aerodynamic? Do you ensure optimal wheel alignment to allow for faster wheel rotation? Do you ensure your engine is producing 99.9% of its rated horsepower? Or do you simply replace your Ford Taurus with a Ferrari Enzo? Chances are you wouldn’t do any of the above, but rather investigate which portion of the trip took the longest, and attempt to reduce the amount of time spent in that portion during future trips. Unfortunately this time-based performance tuning method we perform in our day-to-day lives isn’t always the same method we use when tuning processes in the Oracle database. DBAs will often attempt to solve performance problems by blindly trying to eliminate all full table scans, rebuilding indexes, ensuring a 99% buffer cache hit ratio, replacing slower hardware with faster hardware, etc. But how do you know if these actions will truly solve your performance problems without proper analysis of a process’s elapsed time breakdown.

  • This presentation will remove the so-called “black magic” behind Oracle performance tuning, revealing a proven methodology that can be used to solve virtually any performance problem
  • The Method R performance tuning methodology focuses on discovering, diagnosing, and reducing the top elapsed time consumers of any poorly performing business process within the Oracle database

November 23rd Presentation Featuring Alex Kizer, Groundswell Group

Presentation: Introduction to NoSQL & MongoDB Database The term “NoSQL” is very ill-defined. It’s generally applied to a number of recent nonrelational databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra, Neo4J, and Redis. They embrace schema-less data, run on clusters, and have the ability to trade off traditional consistency for other useful properties. Advocates of NoSQL databases claim […]
